Research Groups - Space Technology

Within the Satellite Technology group at the Institute of Astronautics several fields of research are carried out aiming for one common goal, see figure 1. The main goal is to develop and demonstrate a so called "Telepresence" technology for space applications. "Telepresence" could be thought of as a method to provide a transparent feeling between a teleoperator and a commanding operator separated from each other. Moreover, the concept of "Telepresence" means that an almost immediate response of a teleoperator to the steering commands from a user on ground has to be provided. To realize the functionality of "Telepresence" a very short signal roundtrip time over the communication link has to be achieved.

Figure 1: Fields of research within the satellite technology group at the Institute of Astronautics

The main project at the Institute of Astronautics is BayernSat which started in March 2004 to develop a micro-satellite. The dimensions of BayernSat will be 50 x 50 x 50 cm and it will have an overall weight of about 50 kg. The primary objective of BayernSat is to verify and demonstrate a telepresent two-way inter-satellite link via a geostationary data relay satellite to a ground station, see fig 2.

Figure 2: Communications architecture for BayernSat.

Current space qualified computers are by far not powerful enough to allow the high processing performance that is necessary for telepresence applications. For this reason, a high performance on-board and payload data processing computer is being developed in the BayernSat project in order to fulfill the demanding Real-time and dependability requirements.

In order to allow contact times between ground stationstations and satellite that exceedsare longer than the approximatelyabout eight minutes achieved by a classical LEO-to-ground communications architecturelink, the data is transmitted via a geostationary relay satellite. With this data relay communications system, cContact times can be extended to about 40 minutes per revolution around Earthorbit.
Further, to establish a communication link an antenna is required which requires a continuous pointing towards a relay satellite and therefore the antenna is developed to fit on a two degree of freedom steering mechanism, also developed at the Institute of Astronautics. To control BayernSat a ground station has been built on the roof of the institute in Garching to enable an S-band communications link for TM/TC (telemetry / telecommand). In the end BayernSat will fully demonstrate this telepresent two-way inter-satellite link but as an intermediate step this link will be verified by a representative test bed on ground by a slight modification of the ground station antenna turn table.

The development of a CubeSat as a student project is also running at the Institute of Astronautics and the main objective is to introduce students to model based development and space hardware integration and design. Furthermore, the CubeSat project aims to develop a low-cost verification platform for small space hardware such as MEMS technologies. The CubeSat project is called MOVE . Munich Orbital Verification Experiment.
